Ugly Gun Of The Month

This is a wannabe monthly serial which will be updated in this running article format.

I love pretty guns. Some people swear by the ugly ones, but since I'm not a combat professional, these fine firearms will ride here in this article instead of on my hip or in my safe.

Enjoy.
Feedback to bb -@- thaumaturgy.net will be read and posted at the next installment if appropriate.

Hi-Point 9mm carbine

This one is almost too easy. In fact, if you google "ugly 9mm carbine", the entire first page is filled with articles about this gun. I include it because I shot one at the end of the day at the indoor range a few weeks bag - just one magazine.

It's Ugly, folks. Really butt-ugly. However, it shot VERY well at 50ft (longest indoor distance), and the factory sights are excellent. It ran fine for me over that 1 mag, and at the dealer price, it will pay for itself in just a couple rentals at the range.

I'm certain there are much prettier guns that could be had used in the same power range as this Hi-Point sells for new, but as most people will tell you, this thing IS functional.

Man, what a hideous piece of hardware. Function over form to be sure.

Ruger PC9 Carbine (reader picture submissions welcome - Ruger's photo not included for copyright reasons)
This frightful creature seems to be the bastard child of the P90 pistol and the 10/22. It hefts like a rifle, but has a whippy little banded barrel. The magazine is in a lousy place for either holding onto or avoiding. The stock sights (on the one I shot last week) were pitiful, and poorly adjusted at only 7 yards, though it could have been the odd leadless ammo. Eeeyuck. Sure it was fun, and with nice big bullets it printed most of 'em touching at that close range. No thanks, though, I'll stick to Ruger's many other superb offerings.
